Living in southeast Texas it takes a while to get anywhere with some topography and views. While the flat land from here is full of different types of ecosystems, the only thing that goes up, are the trees which completely limit the horizon views. The closest mountains we can get to are in Arkansas, which makes for our top destination on long weekend trips.
Arkansas, The Natural State, offers an abundance of public land, forest roads, national forest and parks that can be enjoyed by all. There are also plenty of lakes and rivers to enjoy. Our favorite area is the Mulberry River near Ozark. The turquoise water is captivating (especially compared to our rich brown swamp water). One visit, we watched mink playing in the river and running along the bank.

But what draws us back to Arkansas, is that as we climb higher in elevation, the views become more astounding. Though the mountains are not as high as those in Colorado, they still allow for breath taking views. Although we prefer the Ozarks, one of our favorite views so far is from a little hidden gem in the Ouachita National Forest. Crystal Mountain.

Arkansas also offers an abundance of trees and flowers. As we skip from one area to the next, we also make sure to appreciate little things along with the natural landscapes.
